Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith

It's September, the fall season is upon us, and as the leaves change and the weather turns cooler, families begin focusing on more indoor activities to enjoy. Our museum sites across the Mountain State - WV State Museum in Charleston, WV Independence Hall in Wheeling and Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville - are perfect for quick trips on the weekends and school field trips on the weekdays.

Grave Creek Mound has plenty of activities planned for the month, including a special fossil identification event for Fossil Day on the 18th; Independence Hall is hosting a Teacher Appreciation Day on September 24 and the State Museum offers two new exhibits including an informative exhibit that focuses on the 45th Anniversary on the Culture Center which opened in 1976 and the museum balcony gallery features the exhibit "Absence of Color", showcasing art from the collection in a variety of mediums in black and white.

September is also the start of marching band season! Along with hosting the 10th annual West Virginia Marching Band Invitational this year our department is also introducing the Governor's Cup Marching Band Series. This series will help promote the department's educational VH1 Save the Music Foundation program, which provides free musical instruments to middle schools throughout our state. The series will also allow us to award prize money to high school bands. For more information see http://www.wvculture.org/agency/Governorscup.

Stay safe and we hope to see you soon!
